I'm picking up a Hummingbird 597 tomorrow and my depth gauge should come in tomorrow. Did you mount the transducer on the transom or at the very back of the boat?

I just mounted mine tonight. I mounted it pretty much right next to the center drain (right or wrong...) I bought a Hummingbird HDR650. And just as an FYI... the included hardware sucks. I broke off two screw heads after pre-drilling the holes the way the directions say.

I would consider getting a piece of starboard to mount first to allow for customizing location after the fact. See that on a lot of boats - seems like a good idea.

I mounted mine on the back because I could not get a reading through the hull. The StarBoard is a great idea.

put mine in the bottom of the boat under the engine. I used epoxy and it works well there. No drilling, or anything, basically just glued it to the bilge..lol I have a Garmin 441S Sounder/chartplotter.

As a follow up to my original post. The transducer seems to work fine where I put it. I even knocked it up (has a break away clips) last week and just popped it back into place and all was well. Right now I have it adjusted to that its giving me the approximate distance under the prop but its only adjustable by 1ft increments so when it gets under 1' I am likely gonna hit.

Where we were last week the river is very shallow, you spend a lot of time in less then 8' of water and its not uncommon to be cruising along in 5' of water. Its a tad nerve racking, even though the bottom is quite soft.

I bought a humminbird HDR 650 soon afte I got teh boat. I had Tracker Marine install it in conjunction with winterization. They put it in the back center up under the engine. Works fine.
