Purchased a used Formula BR 280

I have the drives and bellhousings removed to replace all bellows and related parts.

How do I tell of the upper steering pins should be replaced?

The pin gets rusty where the seal rides, then wipes out the seal. Then water leaks into the boat.

Check for play, up/down and side/side. Look inside where the steering arm connects for rust, if rust is found the seal is probably leaking

Pin is rusty, but I dont know if up on the sealing surface.

I've seen all the kits with templates to cut into the transom housing with the replacement coverplate but I am extremely hesitant to do that.

If still tight and the steering arm inside the boat is not rusted, then I would install the missing grease fitting.

I believe the upper swivel shaft should be stainless, and should not rust. The steel shaft usually does not ware out, it is the square opening in the aluminum gimbal ring that becomes worn and rounded out when it is not clamped tightly to the pin. If the ring is tight on the shaft it should be OK. You can retorquing an Alpha to tighten it up, don?t know about a Bravo.
