when do you know your flappers need to be replaced

hello, 5.7/alpha 1 gen 1 ,replacing motor was checking out my exhaust flappers ,and was wondering should i replace ,how to tell if there worn and need to be replaced, they dont really flatten back out ,they hang down slightly with slight gap thank you

I think you will find that new flappers also do not close completely, so I think you are fine keeping the old ones.

if you never overheat, and keep up with your cooling system maintenance. the flappers will last as long as the boat is around, or a few decades at the least

if you overheat, or run out of cooling water for a period of time of 10 seconds or longer. you need to replace them along with all the other rubber bits in your exhaust system

only reason I would replace flappers is if they rattle, rubbing coating wears off and they tap on the exhaust "pipe" at idle. Sounds like a can of marbles.

If the motor is out and you have eyes on the flappers, check the outside area that contacts the y pipe. If there is wear/metal (or plastic) exposed, e.g. the rubber is gone, replace. My best guess is if you've got easy access, just replace. Simple task just costing parts $, ymmv

i figured im there so gonna replace they looked pitted up or a little melted so replacing thanx
