In his hit song, "Drive", what motor is Alan Jackson singing about? I'm guessin' it's a 75 hp Johnson that had "electric choke" written somewhere on the cowling, but what year would it be?

How many of us out there can relate to that song? And, who remembers when their daddy first let 'em drive the boat?

i think i got to pull a skier (sisters) at about 10-11yrs old. but there was no traffic around Nickajack park back then (Chickamauga Lake).

no idea on the motor, the first boat we had was a glastron with a white racing stripe, closed bow and a 40hp Johnson i think.

i like that song. i remember that 72 custom cab ranger pickup,302, with 3 on the column. i looked forward to driving to the dump on saturdays :D

Our first boat was a 1967 Glaspar Avalon 16' closed bow. We got it with a Merc 650 (65hp) anf in 1970 put on a Merc 1250 (125hp). I started driving at the age of 3 (1967) and that song really brings back fond memories.

Craig

Re: When Daddy let me drive

I was 13 when Daddy first let me drive the boat. It was a 14 foot Ouachita with a 25 horse Johnson. I'll never forget it. When I hear that song now I think back to when my boy, The Swamptater, was about 5 or 6. I would let him sit in my lap and steer our first boat, a 16 foot Cajun Specail with a 50 horse Merc. You could tell who he was thinking he was. He had sunglasses on and real serious look on his face. :) Those were the days. He's 14 now, has passed his boating safety test and does all the driving now. I say thats an excellent song.

You got that right, ef. Passing it on is the best part. My son is 31 and daughter is 33. Even now, when we head offshore and I get one or the other to drive while I rig baits in the back of the boat, the look in their eyes is worth every penny and minute of my investment. I wouldn't trade it for the world. Workin' on my 3 yr old granddaughter now, and she already has the spirit.

Great Topic ..

Here's mine with a slight twist.

we have lived on the lake most of our lives. I remember asking my Dad if I could drive the boat on many outings. He always said "soon, real soon" well I continued to ask until I bought my own boat. I asked him why he never let me drive the boat and he confessed one day. Because it was his pride and joy. And if ANYTHING ever happened to her he would just croke.

I am so glad he never found out that my brother and myself would take that Glastron out for a flight test danged near everyday in the summer while he was working.

Good ole' Dad.... :D :D

Re: When Daddy let me drive

Post about brought a tear to my eye. It wasn't a boat but a truck for me. And it was my daughter I let drive. We were at Lake Powell with the boat. My daughter, wife and I went up to the nice bathroom. Turning around I saw 2 miles of sand in front of me and put her on my lap and said "find camp" My 92 Bronco in 4 Low doing 5 miles an hour, got me the biggest smile and shreiks of joy from her. I can't wait until my son is old enough to see over the steering wheel. Just a little off the subject but in the same ballfield...

Al...

Boy are you guys ever lucky. All i ever got to do was fix the boat and not drive it, but hey they were still good times. My turn will come though cause once my boats done Dad can sit in the back and fix it when it breaks instead of the other way around :D

Hey Big Al, I'm fixing to turn an 86 4X4 Toyota, that I bought new, over to my boy for his first ride. Its what he has learned to drive in. It's got 265k miles on it now. He's been fixing it up with new wheels, got the seat covered, rubbing and polishing on it. Drives it all around the place when he gets the chance. It's gonna do my soul good when he comes home with that little piece of plastic with his picture on it.

E.F. I can only hope I can turn over the Bronco or my Mustang to my kids. Just remember to not be too harsh when he brings in that first "Highway Usage Reciept", a.k.a. TICKET. My daughter is 5 so luckily I have some time to wait for that. I have always told her, she can drive anykind of car she wants, as long as it has a Blue Oval on it and We Built it together. She already has my cousin who does paint and body lined up to spray it PINK!!!
