Looks to me like the spindle is scored where the rear seal rides. The best way to fix this is with Bearing Buddy Spindo Seals. I use them and they work great. The first set lasted 10 yrs and 1000s of miles before changing the rear seals.

You definately want to polish that spindle where the seal rides - that discoloration is the beginning stages of rust & could be interfering with the seal. And make sure it's not scored; I have'nt experienced that yet but sounds like BillP has got ya covered.<br /><br />It also looks like scoring where the inner bearing sits - my understanding is that shouldn't be a problem, but I'd polish it up anyway - somebody with more experience should jump in here & let us know for sure.<br /><br />If it's not one thing it's another, eh?

I polished the journal the rear seal runs on and the spindle where the rear bearing rotates, and then reinstalled everything. Then took it for a 10 mile test drive...all seemed just fine. <br /><br />Yet another learning experience...I'm slowly running out of things to learn about this boat/trailer but I'm sure there will be other opportunities in the future! <br /><br />Hopefully this is the end of this thread as far as my issues go, but please feel free to chime in if you have something additional to contribute.<br /><br />Thanks everyone for your help and advice.<br /><br />TB
