Our little city of Jamaica Beach has a force of about 4 full time and 4 reserve officers. They patrol an area 1 mile wide and 2 to 3 miles long. They are always involved in community events and it is good to have them but I wish we could cut their budget a little. It takes around 70% of the total city budget. I had a state DPS officer tell me that my cops have better equipment in their cars than the DPS.<br /><br />I had to go to city hall over the weekend and was talking to one in the parking lot. As we parted I said "must suck to work on New Years"<br />He replied "naw, it's not bad. I gotta go make a patrol then I'll go in my office and play around on Ebay, your tax dollars at work."<br /><br />I'd still rather have them around even if I do occasionally grumble about the cost. We can go to work each day and know our homes and boats are safe. That isn't always true in vacation communities.
