That's great. I can see that happening in a panic. <br />I also know a lot of people in New England that use motor block for moorings

I used my wife's ***** hose filled with rocks and gravel. We were camped at a resort and I told her she sure didnt need those ***** hose more than I needed an anchor. They got snagged, rocks and gravel came out, I flooded the motor and the wind blew me 4 miles across the lake. I finally got a tow from a good samaratan fisherman. Chunk :p :p :p

I stopped buying store bought anchors after my nephew cut the line on the 3rd one. He would borrow my canoe to go fishing by himself, anchor up under a bridge known to hold smallmouth , downed trees, (and snakes). he would anchor in the middle of the downed trees, see a snake, freak out while trying to unsnag the anchor from the trees, and just cut the line...I have a new anchor, but whenever he uses the canoe, he gets a piece of cinderblock now...

A thread brought up from the bottom about anchors. How ironic.

I made one out of an old toner bottle from work. Filled it w/concrete and ran two wooden dowels through it so it would dig into something. Used it once and it worked fine but we discovered that just sitting there was not as much fun as previously indicated. Bought a trolling motor, started bass fishing and haven't anchored a boat in over a decade.

My dad used 2 wheel rims encased in cement to keep the dock in position for years. The had a big steel hoop where the chain was attached and removed each fall, so that when the spring thaw came it didn't take the "anchors" with the ice.

Anchors love water! :D

Uncle Vinnie is the master of "homemade anchors." Just ask and I will send him your way ... ;) :p

WOW, this thread is old, older than me.

I'm glad it came up. There is some funny stuff here. :D I've heard some stories in my time at the docks, but there is always something new here everyday.

LOL :D

I don't think I've ever used a non-Anchor for an anchor. Exception might be that I had a Ski pilon yanked out of my boat from a particularly large and agressive skier. That thing found a stump and we still had the ski rope handle. As good a hook as I've ever had. We weren't goin' nowhere.

"suitcase" tractor weights. The ones you see on the front of farm tractors.
Boy my dad wasn't happy when he discovered them missing...

I use old rubber overshoes with a looped piece of rebar cemented into them. The concrete rubber overshoes protect the boat from dings, and are quite a conversation piece.
