I was told the QL82C runs smoother compared to the QL77JC4.

Why does it run smoother.

L77JC4 has a .040 gap. QL82C has .030....030 is omc recommendation for at least several smaller 2 strokes. And I know they recommend both plugs, that I don't know why. I've used both as is out of the box in my 1992 9.9 and noticed no difference.

Great info !

Would a smaller gap put less strain on the ignition system

The modern ignition systems are very capable / very reliable.-----After all they develop up to 40,000 volts.----Plug gap does not bother the coils in any way.

I'm with racerone. Don't see either making anything 'easier' on the ignition system. I thought that maybe it would make it difference with a slight running condition I had, but it did nothing different. I still can't wrap my head around why they would recommend a gap, then a plug that has that gap. And then also a plug that's the same manufacturer but wrong gap lol

Hotter plug…
Recommended if you idle a lot.
Cooler plug if you run fast a lot.

Beautifully explained.

Why do they only recommend a hotter plug on the 95's and up.

Spark plugs change with fuel burn characteristics.----Fuel is now different than what I remember.----Does not smell the same as it did in 1968

Or 1950 when every angler kept a least one spare set of plugs in their tackle box. One quart of Gulf motor oil to 5 gallons of gas was the mix for my motors for years. Never owned a 50:1 motor until I bought a new Mercury 850 in 1977. In 20 some years only changed the plugs (surface gap) once that I remember.
