Here's yet another interesting spin on the topic:

It's called a Trailer Toad and apparently is designed to lower tongue weight. Seems like an excuse to pull things with your vehicle that you shouldn't be . . . I could be completely wrong, however. If you ask my wife, I am often wrong - but I am now getting completely off topic.

At first the concept of pulling two trailers just seems wrong to me, but I then thought back to my younger days on the farm where we would routinely pull two grain trailers or two rude cotton trailers behind a truck or tractor. My brother and I use to drive these quite often. Of course, we mostly just went forward - very little need to back these things up.

I guess if you have the skills and the law allows, have at it. If the law allows and you don't have the skills . . . well, that is why we have the Stupid Human Tricks forum . . . :D

As far as monitoring the second trailer, there are wireless cameras that can be installed on the rear of the second trailer to see behind it with of course a monitor up front for the driver to look at. Now, trying to back up that mess by looking at the monitor......I dunno...... could get confusing fast.

Those are VERY useful for Motorhomes. Motorhomes tend to have a large overhang from the rear axle to the rear bumper. They can handle the weight of the trailer for towing, but not the tongue weight as the rear axle is typically already near (or over) capacity (esp in Class C MHs).

Re: What's the deal with 2 trailers?

I pull my 16' boat behind my 14' (bumper-hitch) camper about once a year, to a place about 100 miles away and back. I can drive 45-50 mph with a 1/2 ton pickup without the rig swinging much. As for backing, I usually don't need to, and that's good because I don't like to. I hook up the boat last, drive to my destination, unhook the boat, park the camper, then hook up the boat and go fishing. It's legal in SD, and I remember a story on the news about them being dangerous, and law enforcement telling people to take it easy and use common sense.

As for commercial trucks, one semitractor can pull two large trailers or three small trailers. I used to see alot of singles and maybe a pup trailer or two, but since the price of diesel went through the roof I'm seeing a few full size doubles around here lately. Only triples I've ever seen were UPS trucks.

As with any vehicle, they're as safe as their drivers.

It can be done - the "Road Train":

Some of the western US states allow triple trailers for semis:

Yes, it's quite legal here in Ontario with proper credentials.

Every summer I have a friend come to our campground near Peterborough driving a Ford F250 clubcab, 5th wheel in the bed for a 32' travel trailer and an 18' I/O boat hitched behind that.

When he comes in, he backs all 3 up about 200 ft to unhook the boat near the ramp, then sets up the camper on the site, launches the boat after.

He confirmed that he needed his trucker's driving license to do it legally. MTO classes it as a "train".

Backing the 3 up, he uses only the big clamp on mirrors, makes it look easy.
