Valv they are big catfish alright. The Wels catfish is native to europe but not England. I've never heard them described as a pest -- quite the opposite... they don't eat fish much so they are good to have around. They are catch and release in most places so far as I know and live for hundreds of years. I think you can go to Russia and catch them up to 15 or 20 feet in the big rivers.

I was casting for Dolly Varden near the outlet of a tidal lagoon, and nailed a big one. Just as I nearly had it to the net, a fat Coho salmon grabbed the trout and made for the deep. Lucky for me, a 200# halibut snorted up the salmon. It was quite a struggle getting that big halibut in, and when we finally got it gaffed we saw why. Clinging to the halibut were half a dozen big Dungie crabs and a few <br />pounds of shrimp. But the real corker was the six-pack hung up on his tail. The biggest fish ,I ever saw was a catfish caught out of the (I believe The Olkmogee River)spelling?in Georgia in 1967.My father transfered down there to work for Sunbeam Corp.a good old boy,native Georgian took him on a weekend fishing trip on this river.When they came back Sunday afternoon,in the back of this old short bed chevy pickup ,was a catfish thats head was against the front of the bed, and the tail stopped on the open tailgate,his head was probably 2'across(from recollection).As a 12 or 13 year old that fish will always stick in my mind.When they showed me the pole they caught this fish on ,the hook was about 4" long and was bent open about 1/2 of the way.I wish I had a picture of this fish and my Dad.I fished with him in many states and caught alot of fish ,but never ever saw his face as I did that day(I was'nt There for the trip)and I can't even say if either one of them caught it by themself.The only fish kept and both men where estatic to show everyone! <br /><br />mth54- Pink at night sailors delight,Pink in the morning sailors take warning!

There was an article in one of the British papers awhile back about a supposed monster in one of the small lakes there. Seems a lot of witnesses had seen this "thing" come up under geese and swallow them. Everyone thought it was a lot of malarky until a research team pulled a Wels Cat out of there...those are some huge honking fish!!!<br /> Last summer my cousin hooked onto something out at lake Tawakoni here in the Dallas area...took close to 30 minutes to get the thing to the surface(I figured he had snagged either a huge turtle or a piece of waterlogged wood caught in the current under the bridge) turns out it was a 36 pound flathead...that stinkin' little rod and reel were working their behinds off...we got it in the net(or most of it anyway) and had to sorta fold the sucker in half to get him in the livewell...I had several 5-6 pound cats in there I was in fear of him eating!!! And that thing was nowhere close to the lake record.

seems to me the biggest fish story involved a guy named Jonah,,,,wow, let me rephrase that, I don't mean fish story as in "it was this loooong", I studied the bible for 8 years, I have complete faith the story is true and it was a BIG fish.
