Hey guys.....This may seem like a rather stupid question, but whats my 97' crossflow 115 Johnny really worth????
About 85 hrs since my rebuild of time-consuming care and babying....putting this thing together with the uttmost care, with attention to details only an engine guru would appreciate.
I installed all new gears in L/U, waterpump and housing...the usuals. But how do you put a price on the porting, the polishing, removing casting lines, and to top it, a complete alodine, acid wash, epoxy primer and fresh Emron paint....
I want to sell and replace with a V6, and the book says 2645.00 Ave. retail, so my question is: Is 3500.00 out of line?????

It's like giving one of your kids away....sounds stupid, I know.... but those who build their own, understand.

Then there's Mr. Bankerman. He's not going to front a loan based on extras. He's going to look at the Blue Book value and base a loan strictly on that. Unless you can find someone willing to pay cash, or make-up the difference. How are your salesmanship skills?

After so much extra care and time, why would you want to sell it? You'll always feel you came up short on the new motor, and somebody else got the better deal.

Willy, ALL of my outboards get extra time and care when it comes to maintenance.....reason to sell is because I want a V6.
Of the people involved with boating out there, for an engine of this size, very few if any, actually go to a banker for the money.....and, any boater with knowledge knows what goes into a rebuild IF done right, and pays cash anyway.
Heck, I don't HAVE to sell it....I've got a fresh refurb 75' starcraft I can put it on, but the yr of the boat drags the value down again, even though the boat is better now than when it was new.

WOW, for a minute there I thought you had a 75'(foot) boat to put in on, instead of a '75(year) boat, you'd need 4 more to move a 75 footer. LOL.

I'm with willyboy on the value. Most folks won't give a hoot about the extra work or pay much more for it. The best price will come from one of your friends who know and appreciate your work. It's like cars...put a new motor in one and it's still worth book.

Re: What's my engine really worth???

I know what you mean by an old boat dragging the value of a good motor down. Got a trade in. Really old and ugly aluminum boat with a nice newer 90Hp Merc. Motor was worth about $3000, Package was worth $2500. Couldn't sell it! Pulled the motor and sold it for about $3000 and put an old 850 Merc on the boat. Sold that for about $1200. Had a real tough time talking the boss into doing it, but everything got sold quickly and he made a whole lot more money.

Catfish, those are the universally accepted blue book values of the engines.

I hate to say it, but outboards aren't worth what we pay for them. :(

Re: What's my engine really worth???

I think the motor is worth every cent you want, but I can appreciate the work that has gone into it. Unfortunately a lot of other people only look at the book price. For a lot of folks, you start telling them about removing the casting flash and all that you may as well be speaking russian. All they know is you turn the key and it goes. Its like my old Scout I rebuilt. I poured countless hours and more than a few bucks into that thing and didn't get near what I would have liked when I sold it. I hope you get what you are asking, maybe another gearhead will appreciate all the hard work and slide you the green. Is there a way you could use it as a trade-in, or are you hoping to get the cash and buy the V6 from another private party?

Re: What's my engine really worth???

JasonJ, Thanks, and yea, I'm trying to buy the V6 I want which has a burnt piston, but is spotless cosmetically....for the 6th time, I will rebuild another for myself.....I guess I enjoy the engine building as much as anything, as it's my own and I can take every bit of time I need to make it the perfect O/H.
The 'ole 115 is on ebay as we speak, ending tomarrow night...we'll see what happens....
BTW, I had a dealer in central Nebraska look it over today (In person), he said it's worth every penny of 3500.00, and would offer good money on trade if I wanted a carry-over, but I want to "Build" my own....and I'm sure I'd have to add 4-5000 bucks to even come close on a 02-03 carry-over at the least.

Re: What's my engine really worth???

Jason, I hate to say it, but something is only worth what you can get for it. It really doesn't matter if you pour countless hours into rebuilding something if nobody wants it, or really cares. It only gives it more value to you. Look at how many hours are spent rebuilding old cars. You can pour thousands of hours into rebuilding an old car, just to find out there is so little demand for it that you are very lucky just to break even.

The "book value" is a universally accepted value for something. That doesn't mean you'll get that or it's ONLY worth that, but it's a universal "starting point." If it's in fantastic condition, then it'll probably go higher, poor condition, of course lower. It can also be used to talk someone, who is a little too "proud" of their item, down.

If you have a motor worth 100 dollars and you are trying to get 200 for it, I can go up to you and blindly say, "Hey, your engine isn't worth that much", or I could show you the same thing in writing.

It just gives both sides a starting point.

Waterinfuel, that is the lords truth. I have always championed the belief that when you rebuild/restore something, it is because you enjoy it and get great personal satisfaction out of it, 'cause you darn sure don't get the green out of it. I did actually make money on a boat I redid once, but it wasn't a ton of cash. It was just enough to send a big final payment on a vehicle I was making payments on, and it shaved a years payments off and saved me a ton in interest.

Well....those of you that said it ain't worth much won the toss tonight.....the 2125.00 high-bid is an insult to say the least.
Life goes on........ :)

EDIT: Oh yea, I'd like to thank the idiots at Blackb**d engines for telling 2 potential buyers that my powerhead only had about a 100hr life-span because I rebuilt it.......
