Need some advice, I bought this boat earlier this year, never been in water, been working on the interior and checking for rot (no rot :)and wanted to start on the power since winter is here. The po disclosed that it was popping out of gear and there was water in the outdrive. PO also left the drain plug in and the boat filled with rainwater about half way up the motor. So, I took it to the shop and had it inspected before teardown. The starter seized since it was in water so there was no way of running the boat. The plan was for the mechanic to pull the motor and I take it home, clean it up, paint, compression check, and so on while the shop had the outdrive. So the mechanic called me when he went to pull the motor to tell me that the po never filled the outdrive back with fluid, so its been sitting dry for about 8 months, he also stated that the bellows must of filled with water beacuse the ujoints were heavily rusted. At this point I went to the shop to take a look. Definately not good. The mechanic said he didn't know if he could get the motor seperated from the input shaft. So at this point we stopped.

the idea was for the shop to replace the shift cone and reseal. Now I am looking at much more. The mechanic first said that the outdrive was probally shot due to being dry and I would be taking a chance doing all this work only to find out the gears are shot. Than he told me at the shop that my chances were better than 50/50 that the outdrive would be "alright".

This shop is the only volvo shop in town and the mechanic seems to know his stuff. I am just seeing what you guys think and if anyone else has been in this type of situation or had any opinions to add. Thanks

Where in SE Alaska are you? That boat looks familiar.

Why stop ???????? Have them pull the upper gear box off the drive. If it comes loose fine, if not, it may take some work to get the upper removed, but it has to come off or you scrap the whole boat. It's just that simple.
