Easily, the loopers were most powerful. From '85 on they were propshaft rated, rather than crankshaft rated ... the loopers had tons of torque and about 5 to 8% more HP.

Exactly, in fact even a 150 crossflow could not touch it out of the hole or at WOT.

Thanks! Would you know what year this model # would be: E140TRLCTE and how to tell what each letter means in the #?
Thanks

Sure, use the chart in the thumbnail to read the model number.

The 1983 140HP is a crossflow.

Re: What year was the Last V 4 140 HP 2 cycle Evinrude/Johnson?

I had a 1979 Johnson 140-4cyl. on a Sea Ox I bought in 1984. Nice engine, right up until the moment in 1989 that I found small bits of metal in some of the plug gaps. Low compression on 1 or 2 cyls.

Found out Johnson had a "high ring piston" problem early on and covered many engines under warranty. Being old, and me being the second owner, mine was out of warranty and so I purchased an 1987 left over 200 6 cyl. Nice engine.

The thing is, I contacted Johnson ( a dealer advised me to do so) and they sent me the parts to rebuild the engine. I had the block bored and I rebuilt it and sold it for $1,500 to offset the cost of the new engine.

Wonder why I like Johnson engines? Wonder if they would still do something like that today? Speaks to the integrity of a company when it does something like that.....something they were not really obligated to do.

Sorry, did not mean to hijack the topic, but wanted to pass on a good thing, Greg

Thank you, do you also know what the factory compression rating should be on the particular engine?
Thanks

OMC never published "factory" compression numbers but some of the more experienced OMC techs around here probably have opinions as to what they compressed from the factory.

I measured my '85 140 periodically and 140 to 150 psig was the normal for that motor as I recall, but different engines even in the same model year year may differ significantly. I've measured some 140 loopers below 125 psig all around and they were running fine and no reason to worry.

Motor can (and will run fine) with the charging piece DOA.

The 140 from 1983 is a Xflow, the 140 from 1986 is a looper. They are not comparable.

Entry 22: "Thanks! Would you know what year this model # would be: E140TRLCTE and how to tell what each letter means in the #?..."
Entry 26: "Thank you, do you also know what the factory compression rating should be on the particular engine?......"

The 1983 140 crossflow in good to very good condition will test at around 135 PSI at sea level.

Re: What year was the Last V 4 140 HP 2 cycle Evinrude/Johnson?

Hello,
I am looking for a 1994 140 Evinrude to buy. I see in my research that they made 3 models that year:
E140TLER
E140CXAR
E140TXAR
Would you know what the code is to read these #s? And what each one of the above motors is?
Thanks.

Generally, you can "read" the recreational model numbers by clicking the thumbnail below. The model numbers you listed are, respectively, for a longshaft, counter-rotating extra long, and extra long shaft.

AR in the model number is 1994.
