What Year Please?

I'm looking to buy a 85hp Merc. I don't know the year for sure, the guy thought it was a 79. It's a Kiekhaefer Mercury 850, serial # 1578945, also a straight 6. Does any one know the year and if these were a good motor at all or any common probs? Supposedly it was rebuilt from the guy he got it from, Its to big for his boat, only wants $200. Is it worth that?
