I have a 1963 Evinrude 18-hp outboard, model number 18302. I have searched for a solid answer. will a 1960 18-hp carburator fit my 1963. For future reference, can this information in any situation of interchanging parts be found on paper? I figure there is a master cross reference out there somewhere, i just cant find it. i searched the forum, marineengines...

most of the internal engine parts on that motor will interchange back to 1957 and up to about 1964 HOWEVER the cowls and some of the other exterior parts are different

but why are you changing carbs??? whats wrong with the one you have?

as far as a master interchange best i can tell you is that marineengine has the answers BUT BUT BUT you have to look in the right places and it takes ALOT of finger work to find them

yes i tried marineengines.com and found their diagrams and part search by model number for available parts. I thought i looked pretty hard throughout the site. the information might have been right there in front of me and i missed it. Well i rebuilt the outboard bottom to top. have been trying hard to salvage this carb i have. i have cleaned the carb, i adjusted it for hours on the water. ( have not put a carb kit on it ) right now it wont start without starting fluid, wont idle and cuts in and out (bogs down) at high speed. So i figure that its possible for the jets to be shot, something i cannot see. i found a new one on ebay for $100. just not sure if they will match up.

You answered your own question. Put a carb kit on it. They're only $20 or so. You have the classic symptoms of a gummed up carb. And the the next one you get might need the same done to it. Remember, they're 50 years old or so. Make sure you remove both needles valves and clean and remove the old packing nuts in there and then get new ones (they come in the carb kit). Also pop off the top welch plug and clean the idle circuit in there. Once you have rebuilt the carb, let us know how it goes.

Btw, I have about 8-10 18hp's. I love them. Use em all the time.

Also, I have the parts manual for that engine if you want it PM me your email address and request.

Oh, and as mentioned, almost all parts are interchangable on all the 18's from '57 to the early 70's as well as a lot off the 20hp & 25hp 22 cubic inch engines. (but those carbs are a different size)

Thank you very much. i did open the carb, but not to that extent. i just got on ebay and orded a carb kit that includes, gaskets, float, needles and seats!! I almost spent $100 on a new carb. should have came here in the first place! This motor feels like it has alot of power before it cuts out.

get this kit it has everything and will rule out everything

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...0578356970&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK:MEWNX:IT

btw take your needle valves out and make sure the taper is nice and even if its not youll need to replace em but they are only about 10 bux each the highspeed needle is a short taper and the low speed is a long taper when you pull em youll see what i mean low speed in the top high in the bottom
make sure you take all the screws out, the plug (drill a hole in it and use the back of the bit to pry it out), AND the lead shot (youll have to drill the shot out with a small bit (3/32") scrape out the packing washers with a small screw driver, and take the seat below the float out with the biggest flathead screwdriver you can find ( i bought a husky at home depot for 8 bux) get yourself a gallon can of gunk carb cleaner (from your favorite auto parts house 20 bux) and soak EVERYTHING for about 8 hours take it out rinse it with clean water and blow everything dry

blow out these two holes with a little air and make sure they are clear

and this one

IMG0047-1.jpg

put in the new float WITH THE SPRING something like this dont forget to use the new needle and the new seat from the kit!!

_float_needle1.jpg

put it all back together with 3 packing washers on the highspeed needle and two on the low speed tighten all the screws flatten the plug out a bit and replace the shot with a new one tapping it flat in and over the hole with a small hammer

initial settings on the needles are as follows and DO NOT deviate from this no matter what anyone here says after i post this
high speed 1-1/2 turns out from GENTLY snug
low speed 1 turn out from GENTLY snug

when you all done fire it up and set the idle to the lowest setting and then turn the low speed needle in 1/8 of a turn and wait engine will rev up a bit throttle it down and repeat do this over and over until when you turn the needle in it spits back and dies turn it out 1/4 of a turn and thats your low speed setting now tighten the packing nut

splash your boat where you have plent of room to run flat out gun it and then 1/8 of a turn inward at a time and waiting for the engine to respond turn the needle in un till it feels like it looses power turn out a quarter of a turn tighten the packing nut snug and you are DONE!!!!

One thing that can affect the performance of a carb, is if someone bottoms out a needle too hard to make the adjustments on them. Believe it or not, I actually bought an old 18 last year, that had both needles literally stuck in it and it ran fine. LOL I had to gently work the needles free with a lot of WD-40, but the carb worked out just fine, when the needles were freed up and set to their best settings.

Sometimes, ignition problems can lead us to believing the carbs are giving us trouble. You said that you rebuilt this motor top to bottom? So am I to assume that you refurbished the entire mag plate assembly too? If the coils are not set perfectly, that would create a weak spark and make it not idle good.

They are great engines. Great power/weight ratio. You'll get her going.

on my fastwin both of the coils were bad but you couldnt tell because the cracks were all over the bottom of the coil and the tops looked good but i was only getting spark on one cylinder and that was only sometimes i took the flywheel off and took the coils out and there was the problem crack all over the bottom of the coils

Re: what year parts interchange with a 1963 evinrude 18-hp?

Thanks to all who posted. This is all very helpful information. Well i rebuilt the lower end maticulously, the power head seemed ok so i didnt bother with it. replaced all fuel lines that are visible and wires that go to the starter. As for the mag plate or coils.. i know nothing about them! im sort of new to this. I've never gotten this indepth with an engine before. also i am new to this forum and have zero clue if im even responding to ya'll correctly in the thread. i see three different ways to reply! I think i may purchase a shop manuel for this engine. im guessing that would give me further knowledge for breaking down the carb/ checking the mag plate and coils. coils= magneto?

I have a 1962 Fastwin - does anyone know if I can take the lower unit from a '62 and use it was a '66 Fastwin powerhead? If not, anyone know where I can get a flywheel for a '62?

66 and 62 fastwins are interchangeable with each other.

Re: what year parts interchange with a 1963 evinrude 18-hp?

I just bought a 1965 18hp Fastwin. It was in original almost immaculate condition, pumped lots of water and starts with one pull. I can hardly wait to get it on the water.
Thanks for the great information posted above! I was a little afraid buying a 46 year old motor. It appears that parts availability and durability is outstanding.
It's nice to know the parts are interchangeable between years.

Re: what year parts interchange with a 1963 evinrude 18-hp?

How does one remove the lower unit on my 1963 18HP (18302) in order to rebuild the water pump. I've removed the 4- 7/16/screws and the 9/16 screw shown in the parts diagram but I cant get the shaft to release so I can get at the pump. Is it held in place by some pin in the shift lever- or something? Any help appreciated.
TIA.

You need to remove the little obround plate just above the lower unit and remove the bottom bolt on the shift rod coupler, completely. That's all you have left to do and it should drop right down. Be careful, don't let it hit the ground.
