What year Mariner - I swear I've tried the archive

Trying to find the year of a 40hp Mariner. 2 stroke, long shaft, assume made by Toyota. Serial number: 6E9L409603. I've tried the various sites given on the forum for Mercury models, but am coming up empty. Used to an Evinrude/Johnson - this is my first foray into the Mercury/Mariner line.

Your year is 1983 serial #s 6e9-407936 thru 6e9 -411853 this is the series for 1983
