What year is this ?

I have searched this site and have been able to narrow this down to what I think is a 73 25hp evinrude.
However there are some doubts due to the following reasons
what appears to be a Johnson cover
A Johnson rubber on the pull cord
A black prop
but evinrude blue paint job.
I picked this up for $25 and is my winter project. The carb needs some springs it will need a new cowling and the cables are missing. The lower unit is leaking and appears to need a seal kit.
The question I have is can someone help me narrow down the make model and year for sure.
The number on the little silver plug is C0059032
Any help is a bonus
Thanks

No ID plate on the transom clamp area? That would have a model number.

Johnson, Evinrude, and OMC were the same company. If your transome plate numbers are gone there is one way you can get the serial numbers. Take off the cover and look at the right side of the motor as viewed from behind. There is a round 1 inch plug. Its normally silver or brass colored. Yours may be painted. On the plug there should be a set of stamped numbers. These numbers would have matched the numbers on your transom plate and should give you the year. If the numbers are gone, the motor may have been rebuilt. Factory freeze plugs always match the motor. You may need to scrape off the paint to see. If it is a Johnson it will start with a J, an Evinrude will start with an E. good luck.

thank you for the response
the number that I quoted on the first post is the number on the silver plug you mention.
I have included a photo in this post

Re: What year is this ?

There are a few things I can tell you by the pictures:

1. That is the serial number on the disc. From it I can tell you that it was made in Canada.

2. The thief that stole the motor was an amature. He thought he could hide it by putting a Johnson hood on it, and removing the ID tag. But we know he was an amature because he didn't know about the serial number disc. All "pro" crooks know about that.

3. The motor is a 1970 through 1972. Can be 18 or 25hp, can't tell without further inspection. 1973-up has a different recoil starter lockout. Pre-1970 didn't have a lockout.

Re: What year is this ?

thanks for the response I think I have narrowed it down by process of elimination but can tell you this
1) it can't be a 1970 or 71 ...no electric start?
2) it has a 1973 starter mount p/n 317328
3) has a 73 or later carb on it due to pn 315237
4) it has no coils on the outside so does this mean a 72 with a 73 starter and carb?
5)the fly wheel is P/n 315840
6) P/n on the crankcase and cylinder assembly is 384602
7) starter pully is p/n 384123
8) the armature plate is p/n 580982

The reson of my asking of you fine gentlemen is because I would like to rebuild as close as possible to original
Again thanks for the help

I guess you are going to have to go through the parts breakdowns and compare the part numbers that you have to the different years.

Re: What year is this ?

The black prop doesn't mean anything. Its probably a replacement Michigan Match. The black paint is standard, if it is.

I'm going to guess at a 1972 25hp. It has a square choke knob and the high speed mixture knob with a cross molded into it. It shares that trait with the 1971. The 1970 had round knobs on both.

It has an electric start, which the 18hp didn't have in either '71 or '72 and the 25hp didn't have in 1971.

It has ignition coils under the flywheel, while the 1973 model had external ignition coils.

This is a WAG from looking at parts diagrams. Ultimately, the best way to figure out what you have, is to call an OMC/BRP dealer. You can call BRP, but they have a tendancy to pass folks with old motor questions off to the dealers.

Electric starter means nothing. It could have been added at any time as the accessory kit. Other part numbers you are lifting mean nothing either. Same parts were used for years.

Also, the numbers you are getting are casting numbers - which very often don't match up with listed part numbers...

Re: What year is this ?

I agree that the starter could have been added, but with little else to go on, the differences between the motors as produced, provides a starting point for a WAG. I also think the knob difference and ignition coil location differences back up the assumption. Its still a WAG, but is at least one with some logic to it.

That said, I'll repeat myself - trying to get a model year on the powerhead from a dealer, is probably the best way to go. Given that the motor can be reasonably narrowed down to a couple of model years and hp ratings, most of the parts related to non-powerhead items, are likely to be the same. There may be a couple of exceptions, but most likely just a couple. It is the powerhead, carb, ignition parts, etc., that he needs the more exact info for.

Well it's a 22 cube engine so parts will fit on it for a from the 50's on! and $25 was a great deal. I'd have snapped it up also.
