That engine seems to be a mix of several.
The block looks like early 80, cowling is 87 or newer as well as the power-pack.
I believe that engine was 'originally' delivered with dual packs.
Carbs seems to have plastic bowls.
My guess, an early 80 rig with later than 87 ignition, carbs and cowling from a 150 commercial.

I think you are probably right about that. It's a hybrid.

Here's another picture that shows the carbs a little better.

Unfortunately the old 'where used' part number search has disappeared from the BRP parts site as well as the Sea Drive.
This makes the ID through part numbers a bit more difficult.
I'm afraid you may have to live with an 'age range' and not a specific production year.
If needed, then ID the individual parts.

Re: What Year Is My Johnson 150

I may have solved the mystery.

I found a part number on the power pack. It's 584043. It looks like this was used only on the 1991 Johnson 150.

Arer you sure that's not 584044? Those were used on several 150HP outboards around 1989.

I have a frankenstein motor too. I was unaware of it when I purchased it, but as i have gone thru the thing, I settled on making it a specific year. Fortunately for me, i could read the engine ID on the core plug. After much research and alot of wrenching and talking with many knowledgeable men(this forum), I've come to the understanding about this motor. Crossflow's are basically the same motor for many years. There is some block differences such as porting and bre size. But the 150 is the small bore 149 ci motor. Carbs changed, ignition changed, but the engine is relatively unchanged. If it's running ok, then let it eat!! I will say that you have late 80's carbs because of the removeable plate on the top of your carbs. I discovered just recently that 85 and older don't have that plate. It definately makes rebuilding them easier. Good luck and don't sweat the little stuff. I have a 1985 150 Johnson. Your motor is identical to mine except for the electrical parts.

The power pack is definitely 584043.
Here are all the numbers from it.
CD6L/58
584041
4G0-0A

I had to use an inspection mirror and read it backwards.

This is not the original engine that came with this boat. The original engine was replaced. Since Sea Drive engines were dropped from the product line many years ago, so I now am thinking that what I have is a hybrid that was built up from what ever parts the engine builder had. It's like Johnny Cash's "One Piece At A Time" The last line of the song is "Ugh!, what model is it?"

Re: What Year Is My Johnson 150

keefallan,

I didn't see your post until after I posted my One Piece At A Time theory.

Thanks for sharing your story. I've learned a lot in the process of trying to figure this out. For that I am grateful to the contributors on this forum.

I would like to get my hands on an owners manual. That's what started me on this. What year do you suggest I get? Where's the best place to get one?
