Re: What year? 40hp merc

Don't know of any 40 hp 2 cyl Merc's. Know that the old 4 cyl 44 cu in cross flow charged has been the 40 hp engine for the past 50 years. Remember back about that time they had a 35 that was 2 cyl direct charged.....was a blue band as I recall.

Course what do I know? I dunno. Grin

Must be something to that old engine. My latest catalog is '97 and that sucker (the old Marc 55 of the '50's ) is still there, still cross flow, still 2 carbs.....but it did get solid state ignition. People must like it which means they buy it. So Merc keeps selling it.

Mark

Mark

Hey AMD,

I'm gonna bet that in '77 (or at least durnig that model year) Merc upgraded (had upgraded) the 35 to 40 and the engine I'm talking about was carried as a 50. Then later when they came out with the 3 cyl loopers they made a 50 hp 3 cyl looper and backed the old 4 cyl cross flow off to 40 hp.....or just changed the numbers on the cowling.....maybe smaller jets in the carb.

What do you think?
Boy that has been a long time ago.

Hey, you didn't answer me about your logo picture. Surely that isn't a picture of a 60 hp making a wake like that. 150 I'll believe. 60 naw.

Mark
