I have a 1989 40 HP 2 stroke 3 Cyl Yamaha. Slipping out of gear, plus it's got low compression. A dealer in town had a 2007 50 HP 2 stroke 3 Cyl that I bought.

Would you keep the 40 around for potential parts on the 2007? I know they are 18 years apart, but they look identical.

A matter to check how many parts are identical for both models, will need a Parts Manual to check that out..

“Looks identical”. There could be all sorts in small differences that disprove that, but... it’s not costing you anything to keep it. As Sea Rider said, look through the parts lists of each to compare. You could also make it a project to fix it up as a spare, or to take apart as practice for your new engine
