What Will $3.00+ Gas Do To Your Boating

OPEC's production cuts and the oil industry's reluctance to operate refinerys at the utilization rates of the 1990's have already caused a major spike in US gas prices and this is just the beginning. It is speculated that prices will be over $3.00 per gallon by mid summer.

What effect will this have on your boating for the comming year?

I answered #1 but not for the reason stated. The cost of fuel for the enjoyment recieved is still a great bargian. The cost of fuel will not affect my boat usage. You make it sound as though I have money to burn. Taking my kids swimming will be cost effective even if gas were to climb to $6/gal. In comparison to many other quality family activities boating is and will remain cheap.

I'm with you guys, money is an object thats why I got an old boat, but it is my hobby and I love it so I will cut back on the throttle a bit as cerealdude said and bring an extra fishing buddy to help out with gas (and beer). :p Besides it is way cheaper than going to any sporting event in person.

Zero effect on my boating.

I will, however rate my rates in my business to cover the additional business fuel expenses.

In fact, I am currently pricing all 2004 work on the supposition that diesel will be $3.00 ± per gallon.
I normally use 150-250 gallons weekly in my business.

I too disagree with the gas price increase, but I think we need to decide what is really important to us. So many people complain about paying $1.80 for a gallon of gasoline (that's the current price here), but pay $1.19 for a 20 ounce bottle of Pepsi (that works out to more than $7.00 per gallon.) My solution, enjoy your boat as much as possible, save up gas money by drinking free water from the tap. It will never work, but it's an idea.
John

I agree w/bassman, give up some of the other riduculously priced vices. Long live boating. I remember the same rumor going around last summer. With an election looming, I bet Bush will curb the increase in gas prices to make the economy look good under his watch. .02

Well I answered number 2. With an 80+ gallon gas tank a weekend of fishing can get expensive. Oh we'll still go, but I think I will do a little more drift fishing. ;)

I figure I'll just have LF get an extra job to cover the increase.

Thom – since you’re in Florida, can I vote more than once? :D

Fwiw, we’re told the S.F. Bay Area leads the nation in gas prices. We’ve already been stunned and immuned. Regular has been over $2/gal for a while now.

I doubt the gas will get that high. All the so-called speculation and all that is meaningless. If gas does get that high, then the president should be doing something about it, as it will damage the economy dramatically. The price of everything will go up to compensate, and consumer spending will drop. People will get less pay increases because the company has to spend more in fuel. I am already preparing myself in case it does get like that: My bicycle. I will ride a bike to work before I will sacrifice my boating.

I am curious, why is there never anything said by the federal government about the gas situation? It like they are letting it happen and don't even care. Yeah, I know half of the politicians are in bed with big oil but geeze, they could at least fake it....

Re: What Will $3.00+ Gas Do To Your Boating

If the price of gas reaches $3per gal. that will be a 120% increase here in Utah. That means it will cost me $450 to fill my tank. I dont know about the rest of you but I sure didnt get a 120% increase in my salary this year. It will bother me and probably affect my boating, which means I will only invite my friends who have money. Lets face it, boating has never been a cheap past time. In fact dont you know what "Boat" stands for?

Bring
Out
Another
Thousand :D

Fwiw, California’s non-representative, Sen. Barbara Boxer, has been calling for federal investigations in the pricing of gas for a couple of years now. Gas pricing aside, hopefully, she will be gone come the first Tuesday in November.

That's one of the biggest jokes I've ever heard, 18rabbit. That is like the fox complaining that the hen house has been raided. A good example of a typical Kerryism. Say how you don't like it, on one hand, but do nothing about it on the other.

The Democrat/Socialists love high gas prices. They want to get you out of your vehicles and into their overpriced mass transit, one more notch in your loss of freedom and independance, which they abhor. One more notch in your dependance on them.

It's the Democrat/Socialists who hold up our Commonwealth cousins as an example that we should follow, lying down like sheep and swallowing exhorbitant highly taxed gasoline.

It's the Democrat/Socialist/Radical Environmentalists who keep new refineries from being built and expanded, all the while fighting tooth and nail to keep us from developing known sources of fuel.

It is the Democrat/Socialist/Radical Environmentalists who so brazenlly demand that we tear down our hydroelectric dams which would drive other energy prices thru the roof.

It is the Democrat/Socialist/Environmentalists who demands that practically every city have it's own unique gasoline formula so that thin supplies in one area can not be augmented from surpluses from another area.

It's the Democrat/Socialists who blame high gas prices on the Chaney/Haliburton conspiracy while it is they that are at the root of the problem.

All this is to say that Barbara Boxer is full of hot air!
