What size jon boat... length and width?

If it's big enough 3/4" thick exterior grade plywood is my choice, ACX or BCX grade.

If your boat is smaller like a 12 footer you should consider 1/2 or 3/8" decking because of the weight factor.

Posting pics of your boat will help us help you better because we'll se what you have to work with.

Like JNG says, I'd recommend 1/2" Aruaco Plywood from Lowe's it has more plys, practically void free and uses 100% waterproof glue. Really nice stuff. You'll still need to seal it well. The best sealer is Epoxy but it's kinda Pricey. A good Oil Based Paint like Rustoleum will do a good job too and a $35 gallon pail of that will seal up the plywood and make it last a long time especially if you take care of the boat and keep it covered in the off season.

Well that's was my next question what would be a good sealant.. so rustoleum is a good sealant? Is there anything else I need to add to the sealant or just the rustoleum about how many coats of it

Re: what type of wood for my project

Like I said, the Rustoleum is one of MANY alternatives. Epoxy, IS the best. Another is Marine Varnish 3-4 coats, Another is Polyester Resin and Fiberglass mat. And then the OLD TIMER's Sealer of mixing 1 part Boiled Linseed Oil with 2 Parts Mineral Spirits and 1 Part Polyurethane and apply 2-3 coats of that. Lot's of Choices. If you decide to just paint the wood, I'd recommend to Thin the first coat about 30% with Mineral Spirits so it will really soak into the wood. Really pay attention to the Edges. Then apply two more Full Strength coats. If you do that, with good Care and Maintenance it should last a lot of years with some occasional touch ups. Are you gunna put anything on top of it, like Carpeting or Vinyl??
