Re: can I use automotive oil in boat

Well you can use the Merc 25/40 stuff or follow their older recommendations and use a straight 30 up to 50 *F and a straight 40 over that temp...If I had a new engine under warrantee I'd use their stuff but in an older engine a good quality straight HD oil such as Shell Rotella, Chevron Delo or Pennzoil Marine is more than adequate. And all of these oils will be much better at staying in viscosity than a car based 10w/30 or 10w/40. Keep in mind that operating conditions of your sterndrive are not the same as for your car engine. They run at high revs just to cruise even though the engines run cool and the oil doesn't get that hot, a multi vis oil can get sheared down enough for it to be of concern. So you don't have to use an expensive marine oil, but a good straight weight HD oil will be just fine.....

I use Rotella T 15/40 in all my engines- boats, pass car, mowers, generators even the 9000rpm drag car. It's the only oil left on the market (that i know of) that still has Zinc in it. Long story short, if you use a oil that works for you, use it.

Re: can I use automotive oil in boat

When was the last time you saw ANY engine damaged from using "the wrong oil"? A couple of exceptions..wiped cam from lack of zinc, or worn distributor drive gears from the oil being too thick?

Alot of advertising hype. Small block Chevies are just regular production engines, and any good oil will provide adequate results.

Like Danny above, I use 15-40 truck oil with zinc in my flat tappet marine engines.

Don, AMEN to that. Maybe others will get this message.

So sethjon, when you write....

Amajor brand 10/40 is great!

...you do realize that a major 10/40 oil is specifically NOT recommended by the manufacturer as quoted above - right? Even highlighted in Don's post.

Hey - feel free to use it. Just wondering if you "got the message." ;)

Finer things.
I have merged your two oil threads into one. No need to have two posts on the same subject.

My Mercruiser has a label on the valve cover that says what weight to use. I buy that weight oil and use it. The boats only had one brand ran it it, for 25 years. I doubt if that makes much difference, though.

Man!

These oil threads just don't stop do they?

My last boat (1966 Mercruiser 150 that Dad bought new) never had the head off,..............hour meter failed in the mid 80's at around 1800 hrs, ...........ran fine(for 39 years:eek:) when I sold it in 2005,......... and had the oil changed regularly with whatever was available at the best price.......

There are MANY people here and on other boards that make the same claims (using a multitude of different oils)

I am doing the same thing with my current 1997 454.

To repeat.....If you don't want to use what Mercruiser/Volvo/OMC/Briggs & Stratton/Scott Atwater recommends, use whatever you want......

The oil I use is in my "signature"!!

Cheers,

Rick
