Well you can use the Merc 25/40 stuff or follow their older recommendations and use a straight 30 up to 50 *F and a straight 40 over that temp...If I had a new engine under warrantee I'd use their stuff but in an older engine a good quality straight HD oil such as Shell Rotella, Chevron Delo or Pennzoil Marine is more than adequate. And all of these oils will be much better at staying in viscosity than a car based 10w/30 or 10w/40. Keep in mind that operating conditions of your sterndrive are not the same as for your car engine. They run at high revs just to cruise even though the engines run cool and the oil doesn't get that hot, a multi vis oil can get sheared down enough for it to be of concern. So you don't have to use an expensive marine oil, but a good straight weight HD oil will be just fine.....
