Just got in last night from Paris and on the honeymoon I snapped a picture of these fish in the fountain in the garden of the Palace of Versailles. Any idea?

Congratulations on your marriage.
The fish are carp. Or perhaps they are called exotic royal brown koi (koi brun royal exotique).

Carp. They put them in the fountains to look good and to eat the algae, keep fountains clean.

At least in the moats around Japanese castles, they have pretty multi colored ones, leave it to the French to put in the brown ones.

In Lake Ontario in the 70s I saw what I thought of as a goldfish carp cross. They were at a rock of an island a half mile off shore. Mostly brown/green with orange blotches. Also when I lived in Paris almost 40 years ago, I think I remember similar sites in some fountains.
The size and body shape of these fish were all carp. Back then, Koi were giant goldfish. :)

I saw all kinds of weird looking combinations in the Great Lakes, people dump their aquariums in the lakes and you see giant goldfish and black "goldfish" and mottled looking ones AND they crossbreed with the regular carp.

The one in the picture is a common carp, such as can be found in lakes and rivers all over America.Whether they are normally scaled like the one in the pic, called commons,or with larger and irregular scales, called mirrors,or with no scales at all, when they're called leathers, they are all the same fish.the variations in coloring are wide though some waters throw up more of one kind sometimes.Koi also are just carp, not goldfish, they are just pretty colored variants.
They are a very worthy quarry on rod and line and will put up a fight as good or better than just about any freshwater fish in America.Correctly prepared they are also delicious.

PS When I lived in Paris in the 50s there was one in the pond at Versailles with a cold ring on it's tail, allegedly put there by Napoleon.

Yup Carp, around here they have people come from all around Europe and the U.S. for tournaments. I think 1st place is 5 to $10,000 for a total in pounds or get the bow out and let the arrows fly, reel them in and make good ferlizer...

When you catch or snag a carp in my area, they want you to kill it and leave it on the bank...

Re: What type of fish is this??

That's because they are bigoted and ignorant, they will probably tell you that they are a non native fish, ignoring the fact that in most of the US so are pike, largemouth bass, brown trout, walleye, rainbow trout and a whole host of other fish generally regarded as native fish. They will then go on to tell you that carp eat other fishes eggs and that they muddy the water.ALL fish eat other fishes eggs and nobody muddies the water like us boaters do.In bass waters where carp are present the bass would probably be pretty hungry without the carp fry to eat and would likely turn more cannibal than they already are.
Fact is,carp are just a fish like any other, they have a bad rap for a variety of spurious reasons that I won't go into here, suffice to say that to the average joe angler they are the largest ,most powerfull and crafty fish he'll ever come across and a very worthy adversary. Of course to the brave hunters that like to shoot things that can't shoot back they are a sitting duck and a gift from heaven.
Do I sound like a carp angler? You bet I do.How many 20lb fish do you catch on a regular basis?
