What part of the outboard do you measure to see whether it is a short shaft or long shaft?I just bought a perfectly running little Johnson 6 hp,1965 and it looks a little long.Thanks.

They came in two sizes: standard 15"; long 20".

The long came with the 5" extension between the midsection and the gearcase.

Basic Johnson model was the standard CD-22. The long model was the CDL-22.

You could buy the kit and make the CD-22 long.

The measurement is from the transom clamp bolts to the anti-ventilation plate above the prop.

older motors are 2 inches longer, due to position of water pump.
