had a guy give me a 1975 larson. has a mercruiser 302 188hp thats what the valve cover says. The boat ran last year but it looks like he had a leaking exhaust elbow. he also say the carb and fuel system could need a good cleaning because he could not get it up to full speed. Would it be ok to run it with the water leak from the exhaust elbow? Any other advise would be great. would like to fire this up to see if it is worth running. I also dont thank he did any winterrising this last year. the boat was stored outside. thanks

Re: what to do?

Welcome to iboats.....:)
I would pull the drive & see if the engine will run at all.....
I would not run it with a water supply to it with a bad elbow, you will likely put water in the engine if it was not destroyed by not being winterized.....
Since you don't say where you are, impossible to tell, but if you are in a place that has freezing temperatures, it is likely the block is cracked.....
I'd be looking to see if it turns over at all first.....;)
Post some pics......

Re: what to do?

would one freeze crack the block. I have never owned a I/O. I run a 1972 40 hp johnson outboard on my boat and can do all the mech. work to it, have done alot to her and she's a great motor. I live just north of seattle and it really does not get below freezing to much. I have worked on alot of 302 (have 3 in garage) but not in a boat. what do you mean take drive out. i know what the drive is just dont know why i would remove it for testing.

thankyou
