What to do if your outdrive is in mud?

So today I got caught off guard by an absurdly low tide and it ended up sinking a small portion of my drive into the mud, basically the fin bit of the drive. I have a 24' cabin cruiser so its pretty heavy and knowing the stress being put on that leg in the mud I decided to power trim it up into trailer mode where it began floating again. So this is my question, was it better to trim it out or was I supposed to just let it sit on the out drive until the tide came back in? I assume both cause damage but what is the best course of action? The power trim didn't struggle it nudged the boat a bit but easily moved the drive
