what thickness transom wood?

I am trying to figure out what size wood to buy. The channel it must fit in is 1.5". Along with the wood a 1/16 piece of aluminum is required. I am planning on using plywood glued together. It looks like 2 layers of 3/4 would work when I measure it at the store but that does not take in account the thickness of the resin coating I plan on doing. Any ideas? Thanks

What type of power are you using? IO, outboard? Is it a glass boat or a aluminum? A couple pictured would help a lot.

Re: what thickness transom wood?

hi
welcome to iboats?

why the chunk of aluminium?

and also just to add to your delema....resin coating alone wont do any thing.....unless its epoxy.
if you are just using poly resin coating is a total waste unless you use glass with it.

you could use a one inch and a 3/8 ths and a layer of 1.5 csm and a 1708 wrap
that will give you the 1.5 inches you need....and done forever.

if you are wondering what 1708 is.....just click the link in my sig.....read the first few pages.....it will have full glassing techniques and material information.

cheers

Re: what thickness transom wood?

The boat is a 16' Sea Nymph aluminum. It was rated for 60hp but I am using a 35hp. The old piece of wood was between the aluminum back of the boat and a piece of 1/16" aluminum sheet. The 1/16" piece of aluminum sheet covers the wood on the inside of the boat. The wood and the 1/16 piece need to fit in a channel that is 1 1/2" and is the bottom support. I can post pics in a day or 2 of what it look like As far as the resin, I meant to say epoxy. From what I gather you need to do that to waterproof the wood to prevent it from happening again. I will also have to fabricate a transom cap that will cover the top of it. The guy I bought it from did a terrible job replacing the transom and It rotted again. Thanks for the replies!

Re: what thickness transom wood?

Don't know the year. The boat is 1984. When he did it the first time he just cut out the top half and put in a 2x6 board in. He left the bottom part in that was still rotten. I could have used it for mulch in the garden when I pulled it out. I am slightly embarrased that I bought it but I love the boat. It fits my needs perfect and fits in the garage nice. I will post some pics with explanation in the next day or two to give you a better idea what I am trying to do. Thanks again.

A bit surprised a MFG would deviate from standard measurements, would think the void between both pieces of aluminum would be 1.5"

I would use 2 layers of 3/4" marine grade plywood, epoxied together. You can sand enough off each piece to make up for the thin layer of glass. Whatever wood you decide to use, be sure to seal every single inch atleast twice, top bottom front and back, this includes when you drill holes for motor mounting and plug/scupper holes! I drilled my holes bigger than I needed, epoxied the inside walls of the holes 3 times, then re-drilled the correct size hole. If no water can get to the wood it will never rot! Good luck!!
