Re: What sunglasses you recomend

My step-mom was an optometrist. She wouldn't let us wear anything but Ray Ban.

That was years ago and some things have changed. One thing that hasn't changed is people get so hung up on style and price they mostly buy junk for outrageous prices.

Always: Coated optical glass lenses, prescription if needed. Polarized, UVA and UVB inhibiting, side protection.

I'll offer a little different viewpoint: I go about as cheap as you can-- I go to the dollar store, find a pair of wraparound glasses that fit my face well, and buy 2 or 3 at a time.....

The $22 pair of fishing glasses I bought at Wally were on closeout sale- prob $30 reg price? Not sure.

I bought them because they had informative, educational labels on UV and polarization, so thought it was a good bet. In use, they immediately proved a vast improvement over the cheapos. I went looking for them because I used a pair of nice ones a fishing buddy had, and I couldn't believe the difference between my cheap "100% UV" "polarized" sunglasses and his fishing glasses. For years I wore aviator-style polarized and UV-blocking sunglasses, and they worked pretty well. The were "imitations", but at $10-$15 they were inexpensive and they worked. Recently however, over the course of about a year, I bought about 8 pair of "imitations" (now made in China, and not Japan as before) and they all had the 100% UV-Blocking stickers, and said "polarized," but I can pretty much say they were neither!

I don't think dollar-store glasses are worth a penny, and lately neither are the mall-kiosk name-brand-imitators. Darkness is not protection, and if I can't see the bottom in 10 feet of clear water they were certainly not polarized.

Interesting article here:

Thanks Mark your point of view and the link were a great help. I don't mind spending even $100 for a pair if that's what is necessary and they actually do work. Protect your eyes and reduce the glare so as to be able to see into the water but I didn't think it was. I'm going to Wally World today and I will do some serious looking.

Costa's for sure. I've been wearing them since about 1986. I wouldn't wear anything else. Their new 580 Lens is the most awesome lens I have experienced. The process is patented so you won't find anything comparable.
I have a friend with Maui Jim's and until Costa came out with the 580 lens, I'd say they were every bit as good as Costa but next to the newer Costa lens they do fall short IMO. They're your only set of eyes, take care of them.

I've owned cheapos and currently own a pair of Costa Tripletails and they are awesome, pricey yes, but awesome. I spend a lot of time outside and on the water and I don't know where I'd be without them. I simply don't leave the house without them. Not to mention, if you mess them up, you just send them to the nearest costa repair center and they fix them for free. Hands down I think costas are your best bet.

I have owned 3 pair of costa triple tails and 2 of them are at the bottom of the lake. i still have one pair but i wear them to work because they are scratched but i bought a pair of costa caballeros a couple of months ago and they are great. can't beat them with a stick! I am a firm believer in "you get what you pay for".

Ya, sold on the Costas, used to wear Ray-Ban but few of them are polerized.

I got a model with glass lenses to avoid scratches and if you spend some time on Ebay you can pick them up for half price or less.

I used to work at a store that sold costas. I was able to get a pair of the 580s for free, and now I can't wear anything else.

As far as choosing which pair of costas to get, they pretty much all have the same lenses, but the lenses have varying colors, a some mirrored finishes, and the big difference in 400 or 580. They main thing is to find which frame you like and which ones are comfortable for you to wear. The best thing to do is to go to a store that sells them and try on the different frames. When you find a frame you like then you can decide on the lenses and frame color. The stores can usually order any combination you want and have them within a week.

Re: What sunglasses you recomend

Just curious wat you guys think are the best glasses for the money. I see alot of people with Costas but they have so many models I have no idea what I want. What do yall use to get rid of the glare?

Before I got lasik surgury and switched from prescription sunglasses to off the shelf I used Maui Jims and Costas. Personally, I like the costas because, to me, they seem to be better built for fishing but the glass lenses are heavy and, in my opinion, they are kinda ugly. That said, I will be using Costa's from now on because ugly or not they work for me.

Just my opinion
