I have an old 15hp engine (long shaft) that is on its last leg. If I replace it, what size would anyone suggest? The boat weighs approx. 5,000# and the 15 hp seems sufficient.

My boat is a couple of feet shorter and an ancient, but reliable 9.9 Evinrude is normally plenty. Only time I have felt the desire for more power was motoring up stream on a couple of river anchorages. Unless you have fast running tides or strong currents to buck, 15 HP should be adequate. Besides, once you get to "hull speed" it takes a bunch more motor to gain anything.

I have a 27' Oday on an inland lake and a 7.5 honda pushes it along just fine. 4-5 knots the only problem i ever encounter is getting out of the slip if the wind is up 20-25 knots and directly on the stern.

talisman,<br />My Hunter 25 displaces 4400 lbs and the 9.9 hp Johnson is more than adequate to move it to hull speed. It's probably more than needed since the 9.9 relaced an older 7.5 hp Evinrude. Happy sailing.
