I cant see, but you may have ok with just the trim rod assemibly. On the front of the motor there should be something that would push against the trim rod. I cant see from the pics of your unit. On my Johnny, its part of the steering bracket. when you lower the tilt, it fits against the rod (C shaped). If you have a rod that with fit through the holes, slowly lower the motor, and look where the area on the motor will touch the rod. You need the trim rod, and choose the hole where the boat gets on plane fast. To far back and it will not get on plane fast, and bounce the bow, to far forword, and it will plane fast, but drive the bow into the water, and not handle well.

I just looked at the parts list again, its the bracket swivel, has the C shaped area. You should be good to go once you get your trim rod.

I really dont see anything wrong with your prop now, other then some paint loss. I also think the the 6 is a G, may have something to do with the design of the prop. Without the trim pin in, the motor will sit to far forword, and possiblly cause more hull to be a drag in the water. With the trim pin in-place, you would gain more rpm, and the prop you have now may be ok. It may not make up 600 rpm. I would have tested the 14 pitch, with trim pin first.

I'm a little suprised, no one noticed no trim pin in the first place. Steelespike is good, as far prop selection. But everything else has to be right first, before a prop change is done.

I understand, I think the 6 is a G now too, hard to read at the time. I agree about the trim pin. The prop is actually bent a little on one blade. I wanted a new one to have a spare and I thought it would be a good opportunity to refine my setup. I don't think going down one pitch will have any adverse affect besides the rpm's going up a few 100. For 90 bucks I thought it would be worth a shot to get all of this refined.

Re: What prop do I need?

Well I got to take the boat out today. Hole shot was much much better. The rpm's are great too. It was right around 5100 to 5200. I was running about 32 mph as well. I just have one issue. With the trim pin in the lowest position when you get up on plane sometimes the bow would start bouncing. I moved it up a hole in the trim pin and it was worse. It wasn't constant but sometimes it got pretty bad. What is causing this and what is the solution? Will moving the motor up a hole on the transom solve any of these issues? Thanks for the help.

Re: What prop do I need?

That may have been why the pin was missing. The po removed it to eliminate porpoising.
It may even be somewhere in the boat.
Your new prop probably raises the bow more as well.
Moving up a hole may help and your new prop should resist venting better than the old one.
It may not show much performance difference but you will be dragging less through the water.
Your transom may be too vertical You can buy or make wedges to increase the angle of the motor.
By the way that device to starboard of the motor might disturb the water enough to cause venting
in certain circumstances. In the pictures it does seem it might be really catching a lot of water.

Thanks for the reply. I will move the motor up one hole. I know it is a small engine and all but would a small jack plate help at all? That might be an option at some time......

Re: What prop do I need?

I ordered some smart tabs today. I read up on them and they seem to have a lot of benefits, especially for smaller boats. I talked to them via email, great customer service by the way very quick responses, and they said that this should fix any issue I have and give me gains in all areas. I will report back on the after next week when I get back from vacation and get a chance to install them.

Re: What prop do I need?

Got the smart tabs installed today and went and tried the boat out. What a difference, the boat handles amazingly! No more porpoising. Turns great too. I was able to move the trim pin up and it gave me a little more top end. I am turning 5200 rpm's and doing 32 mph with the new prop and smart tabs, can anyone tell me how much slip that is?

The motor is sold with or without hydraulic trim. The trim pin is not necessary when you have hydraulic trim so they leave it off. Sorry I didn't see this post earlier, I could have saved you a few bucks. Remove the pin and you'll be able to trim it back down enough to stop the porposing.

Using 1:85:1(not sure if correct) and a 13 pitch, you would have a slippage of 8,14 pitch(all other numbers the same)14 slippage.

I do not have hydraulic trim. Just power tilt. Prior to the pin I could only plane out with motor all the way down and tucked way into transom. Once you get past 1/4 throttle the tilt will not move the motor. So my bow was plowing the whole time and I could not move the motor up while on plane with the tilt. It is best to have the pin in to ensure the motor is at the same location each time.

Re: What prop do I need?

Its good that you are using the pin, and have your boat running well. As Steel has said, maybe the transom is a bit to vertical. Now with the tabs everything is working the way they should. Have a good summer, and always remember "DE PLUG".

Ahh, I see. So you have no way to trim that motor once you're past 1/4 throttle. Makes sense now.
