This is very possible! And I would guess more likely than not what happened. The motor wouldn’t allow me to turn the handle for the throttle at all in neutral before. It would only work in forward and reverse. I put my foot on the prop when I shifted it back to neutral and it seems to have freed up the throttle to be able to turn idle down in neutral now. I also messed with that shift locker bar and something between the two freed it upI have a theory as to why your breaking your part....just not sure it applies to this motor.
When your working on it when it's off, to get it to go to full throttle you have to be in forward. Now if you don't return it to idle and you shift it back into nutruel it can bind up the linkage. Has to do with the nutruel locater arm.
Did you do that maybe?
