I'm working on a 1950 14hp evinrude fastwin 4438 aaand after taking the hood off and tinkering inside I noticed these cleanish screw holes. Now I'm wondering if there was a part removed. Any ideas?? Thanks in advance!!!

Consider the fact that the 14hp powerhead design was also used on the 12hp Gale and Evinrude Speedster models of the time period---all with different tank and cowling applications. For instance, I'm posting the 12hp Gale parts diagrams and you will see all sorts of brackets and doo-dads not used on your 14hp.

OK thanks!! I am a total noob! As a kid I tinkered with my dad on old cars and motorbikes but this is a new lake for me.

You might pull the flywheel and see if there is fuel leakage up there. It looks to me like the top seal may be leaking (going by the stuff on the side of the powerhead). #23/24 in the Gale diagram that F.R. posted.

I was told it was some kind of sealant they used to use and as the motors heated up this stuff would leak out

Most likely, that goo is the coil coating. Most of those coils are toast. With some effort, you can put modern OMC coils on those laminates.

The motor is 65 + years old.-----I would think they used varnish / laquer when they made coils in those days.----Pull the flywheel and inspect.
