What octane fuel should be used for 150 xr4

I just bought a 1989 checkmate with a 150 xr4 black max. The previous owner (original owner) said that he only ran premium fuel. Can a lower octane fuel be used? Also, if ethanol free fuel is not available is Sta-ble 360 additive good enough to neutralize the ethanol?
Thanks

87 octane is just fine. Premium is a waste of money in that motor. Stabil does not neutralize ethanol. Its just a preservative that keeps gasoline from oxidizing. Mercury even recommends some ethanol in the gas to keep water from straitifying in the tank. Just run it all summer on whatever they sell out of the pump and when you put it away for the winter put some stabil in the gas to keep it from turning into garbage. Better yet drain the tank.
