What level of corrosion is acceptable?

I've been searching for a Mariner and came across one for sale, but have my concerns. Starcrafts seem like a great way to get my feet wet fixing up boats and I feel pretty confident about most aspects of the work. Corrosion is the only thing that worries me.

The guy sent me a picture of the boat and I saw this in the bow. Is this discoloration cause for major concern? The boat is about 12 hours away so only want to go if I'm going to buy it

Strange, it's not letting me upload it. If anyone is willing to offer their advise, can you PM me so I can send you the pic from my phone?

None of us can upload photos directly currently. there is a server issue preventing us, and the moderator team has reached out repeatedly to the hosting admin, however you can link them from a google pic account or similar.

Hack job non-Mariner, not worth a 1hr drive much less a 12hr. Don't waste your time.

the boat is an I/O boat. there would not be a splashwell.

the I/O cutout is still there. looks like the boat is in the middle of a transom rehab.

if all the drive bits are there, and all the trim, may be worth a few beer tolkens.

however as it sits as a project. its scrap value is about what you would pay for fuel.

Assuming that it floats I'd price it as a bare hull rather than scrap. But that doesn't mean a lot.

OP: this isn't a mariner, it's a bare hull. It doesn't have an acceptable transom. It doesn't have anything I'd trust. It's probably someone's hacked-together duck hunting toy.

If you're gonna build up from scratch it's a fine enough place to start and I guess saves you some teardown, but this would be a ground-up build. The "discoloration" is probably just carpet adhesive and no big deal.

Not a 12 hour drive boat and certainly not a runner.

The spray foam used is a big red flag...tip of the iceberg.

Of note, I do not believe there ever was an I/O Mariner, they were all outboards.

This guy...does not to appear to have done remotely acceptable work. The best hope is it's a recent enough "conversion" to have not done permanent damage.
I would say a sawsall savant got an old IO Chieftain and scalped it.
The "cover up the keyhole with a transom" trick is a new one to me.
