What kind of rollers are these?

I'm hoping someone can help me.

I'm in the middle of redoing my trailer and I want to replace all the rollers. On the back end of the trailer are these two row of rollers - bunk rollers I believe they are called - but I'm not 100% certain since I can't even find matching rollers on google under that name (without buying whole 4 or 5 foot runners).

Each of the rollers is a cylinder measuring 3 inches across and under 2 inches thick (possibly started out at 2 inches).

Can I the 'hourglass shaped' bow rollers in their place?

Thank you in advanced.rollers.jpg

You can buy most any kind of trailer rollers at a marine supply or trailer supply store(Northern Tools)....That rig you have looks like some kinda home-made design?...a modified tilt design?....Maybe you could replace all the rollers with a solid strip of polyethylene that would allow boat to slide up on the trailer. The polyethylene would be thicker than the depth of the steel channel, about the same width as the inside of the channel, a few inches longer than the channel(to extend out either end), drilled through and bolted in place, sorta like the rollers....just an idea. Good Luck!:)

Ahh thanks. I will look into that.

I'm not sure what the deal is with the trailer. I'm sure it's had some heavy modifications over the years, but it is a tilt design and I came across a tag on it claiming it was an Eatons Viking from 1973. This is actually a picture (pre-sanding) of it. trailer before.jpg

1st off I wouldn't try to use bow rollers to replace the ones in those bunks. You should look for a close replcement roller or replace the whole bunk. Which could be done using bunk boards instead of those bunk rollers. The brackets to mount the boards are fairly inexspensive as are non pressure treated 2X4's.

I recently had a Gator trailer that was very simular. It had wood bunks that mounted at the end of the trailer and a mount at the 1st crossmember from the end. A very simple trailer that worked very well with little maintenance. Also with the tilt I found that it worked much better with the bunks afixed instead of the piviot like you have now.

Do you plan on using that tilt function?

Re: What kind of rollers are these?

To be honest, I'm not sure if I'm going to be using the tilt. I had to take the boat off to do some minor work so I figured while it was off I would take the time to clean up the trailer - I haven't had it out yet but from the rust and effort it get it working, I would say the tilt was probably not used. Looking it over, it almost seems like these bunk rails (being pivoted) would have been used instead of the tilt.

If I start changing the style too much I would probably run into troubles trying to adjust the heights of the bunks. If it is possible to leave them the way they are and put in some carpeted wood, I'll go with that way.

You could remove the rollers and cut 2X4 to fit and then carpet them. That would also work.

Perfect. When looking at getting some pressure treated or plastic wood and covering it versus trying to find rollers (or align the bunks if I change the layout) - I'll much rather go with the 2x4's any day. Thanks for the help, guys :-D

Re: What kind of rollers are these?

Sorry to be a PITA... but I am off shopping for parts today and I was going through making a list when I noticed something. Going up the length of the trailer they had a row of rollers. A couple of them were split in half so I though they were just regular bow rollers - but on second look, they appeared to have a row of keel rollers.

So, I guess my question is... can I just go with keel rollers? The brackets are set up for 5" rollers and I cannot find bow rollers in this width so I would be looking at swapping out the brackets to put bow rollers in.

Thanks :D

Re: What kind of rollers are these?

The rollers going down the center are what's called spool rollers, 5" is a common size. Watch for tha roller shaft size there are 2. 1/2" and5/8" so make sure you get the right size. As to changing from those roller bunks to all wood bunks it's really not a difficult job and there are many posts here that will tell you how to do it and set it up.

I've replaced those type roller bunk rollers by cutting down guide on rollers. It will depend on the diameter of your existing rollers.

Personally I prefer to just have fixed carpeted wood bunks though.

You could also go with new roller bunk strips and new brackets. Those listed below are the modern version of what you have now.

Thanks for the help.

I managed to finish the trailer and decided to go with carpeted wood. I accidentally put them onto the wrong bolt when connecting to the trailer so I'll have to go back and fix that up before putting the boat back on.after trailer.jpg

BoatMonkey, good job looks great. The wood carpeted bunk looks like it fit those old roller frames very nicely!
