I flew down to LA again today with a $400 ticket. Makes me wonder how they can go bankrupt with each plane having hundreds of passengers paying that much or more. Does anyone know what kind of gas mileage a 747 gets? Just curious...<br /><br /><br />Yes, I'm that bored. ;)

That's the "deal" I got getting the ticket online a month ago. I've paid over $550 in the past for the same flight. This time I got "bumped" to first class though. :D <br /><br />

So at $4/gallon for jet fuel (just guessing) we burned about $17,200 worth of fuel. Then again they probably got at least $100k from the passengers...

maybe you should check the price for an oil change on that baby and while you are at it the monthly payment.<br />All of that is still peanuts compared to the management's frequent million dollar days

I know it seems like a lot, but once the overhead is calulated in it isn't. Well kept planes take well kept mechanics.

Is this a fuel economy question? I am not familiar with the term statute miles. Does it relate to Passenger miles? A motorcycle gets 60 miles to the gallon. With two riders that makes 120 passenger mpg. Cost of the conveyance not withstanding a bus gets much better mileage than a motorcycle.

A garden variety mile. Unlike a nautical or metric mile. <br /><br />Don't aviation use nautical?

4 dollars a gallon would be high for an airline. they buy direct from suppliers then store it at the local gas guy(FBO) whom they then pay cents per gallon to pump for them. At least most do, some store it themself and pump it themself. Also several different models of 747, 100,200,300,400, sp. Each one different fuel burn.Think theres even a new one due out soon.

In (contemporary) English contexts mile refers to the statute mile of 1760 yards, which is about 1609 m, or to the (international) nautical mile, being exactly 1852 m.

That's the problem. Just like our government, they have plenty of money...they just waste it.<br /><br />

I don't know how much they're paying, but I know jet fuel is more than gasoline, and I just paid $3.27 for a gallon of regular.

Jet A-1 (JP-8) is currently going for $4.45 a US gallon in quantities of 1000 gallons. This is the price the Rolling Stones pays.<br /><br />Obviously, the major airlines are all buying their fuel in much larger quantities , and likely on the futures market. I would expect it to be priced cheaper than gasoline.<br /><br />Edit:<br />Ah yes, I am right.<br />A reuters report from 2 weeks ago, states:<br />"On Wednesday (April 12, 2006), jet fuel prices on spot markets averaged between USD$2.06 and USD$2.10 per gallon ..."<br /><br />This is in reference to what the BIG airlines are currently paying.<br /><br /> http://news.airwise.com/story/view/1144917680.html

So defining the mile as "statute" does not really relate to the question at hand and the question is still not qualifed or answered. Thanks.

A statute mile is 5,280 feet, whereas a nautical mile is slightly more than 6,076 feet. A nautical mile represents one minute of Latitude at the equator.<br />A mile was originally 1000 ("mille" in Latin) paces of a Roman <br />soldier. In latter years it has been standardized at 5280 feet. Since <br />the standardization was accomplished by law, it is more formally known <br />as a statute mile. <br /><br />The nautical mile has varied in the past. It is supposed to be the <br />length of one minute of arc at the equator. The actual value has been <br />6080 feet, 6080.20 feet, but now it is standardized at 6076.103 feet. <br />It is called a nautical mile because sailors have been using it for <br />many, many years. This is due to the use of spherical trigonometry in <br />navigation.<br />Howzat?

Yeah, they're nice enough to tack that on in addition to the normal fare. <br />
