What kind of cooling?

I'm wondering how to tell if a motor is air-cooled or water-cooled.

I have a West Bend Shrimp 2 (2 horse), model 2101 that I suspect is air-cooled. I'm guessing this motor is about 50 years old. I don't know if I can test-run it without a bucket of water and I'd hate to find out the hard way.

I understand that an air-cooled motor requires a standard mixed oil for 2-cycle engines rather than the water-cooled oil.

Thanks for your input!

It is indeed a 61 air cooled powerhead with a water cooled exhaust leg.So you still need to put it in a tub.I believe it has a tube that picks up water from the prop wash to cool the leg. Most do reccomend Chain saw 2 stroke oil.

You should be able to visualize cooling fins on the cylinder and cylinder head (maybe underneath the shrouded air ducts) on an aircooled engine. Something like a lawnmower engine. Like he said above they still pump water for the leg.

Re: What kind of cooling?

Very good. Thanks, Steelspike, for the description (and the year). Thanks, Jimd, for the cooling fin hint. The motor does indeed have fins on the engine. I'm glad to know that the leg is water cooled though, and very glad that I haven't run it without water.

Does this type of setup typically have an impeller then, or does it just rely on the force of the prop wash?

Are any boat motors currently being made with this type of setup or is it an older design?
