This is my first boat, a 1978 Sears Gamefisher (14') and I have no idea what the screw is for that goes through the hull and has an attachment underneath. It is located in the center in the back. Any suggestions or information would be great. Thanks.

My guess is a transducer of some sort. The pix of the hull bottom is kind of dark, so I can see much detail

Are any wire ends on top of the shaft? It does look like some kind of transducer,. No idea what brand.

I would like to take the boat off of the trailer to sand and paint it but I am afraid it would damage the surrounding fiberglass from the weight on the thing in question. Maybe I could remove it but not sure. I think I do see wires.

Yep, it is an 'old' fish-finder / depth indicator transducer. Totally useless now that the cable has been cut off. You can unscrew the nut off of the inside and remove it.
