what is this called it looks like its made out of tin, is there a substitute to it. rubber piece maybe?. this thing is old and ugly

Ayuh,.... It's an aluminum trim piece, that just hides the rough fiberglass edge...

Clean it, sand it, 'n paint it...
Or,...
Replace it with whatever edge trim ya want...

Highly unlikely. If it is not physically damaged, and just chipped paint/ugly, Im with Bond-o on this one. Clean in up/sand it/strip it with paint stripper and repaint it. Put some elbow grease into it as a project and you will appreciate it that much more.

I bought a piece of that aluminum edge trim at my local West Marine just a few months ago. They had ordered it in for someone that never picked it up. Taco Metals still makes it. I am sure that is where West got it since they carry Taco rub rail. It was smooth instead of having the bead detail yours has.
