What is the rod that goes across the transom plate to stop the motor at a certain angle? Some sort of trim I guess. And where can I get one? Mine rusted in one of the holes and it crumbled when I tried to get it out. It's a 1978 55hp johnson.

I know what you are talking about, but I don't know what you call it. It acts to "prest" maximum trim. I would try a motor boneyard, or a grade 8 stainless steel bolt, or a dealer.

I would try to get another one from a dealer or junkyard. It is made so that you can change it quickly, even out on the water, so I would use a replacement rather than a bolt.
