What is this on the transom?

No, the Depth Finder Sensor was off the boat that I traded in, but the Speedo tube was there from the factory. The Dealer, likely pulled the tube back, drilled out the Hole and used some sealer when both tube and wire were put thru.

Most people (I think) put a hole above the waterline and bring the cable in through that hole. I opted to just bring mine up and over the gunwale and run it behind one of the stern jump seats. In my case, it's hidden pretty well, doesn't get in the way and I didn't have to drill any holes in the hull (which I preferred).
Would love to see a picture of that! Do you happen to have some? I will go with your route.

As long as you seal the hole in the transom with some resin & then sealer there is no problem with running your speedo tube and transducer cable through the transom above the water line. My boat has been like that for many years. Just seal the hole properly.

If people were see how the boats look prior to the floors, the trim pieces the cover the seam between Hull and Cap are installed, and the carpet being glued down, a lot of boats wouldn't be bought.

yep, thats why boats redone by owners can be much better built, as has been seen in the resto forum many times.

There is a risk of building a hull Too Rigid, and having the Glass shear along the beefed up Stringer/Keel. Perhaps if they put down more glass on the Hull, and not just the Stringers/Keel...

Hi. You should maybe benefit from being aware that I’ve yet to find a transom mount transducer…that doesn’t work sat inside the hull and mounted in a medium that can be sounded through and keep it in place. Every boat I’ve had, I’ve done just this. I just experiment first off with a blob of petroleum jelly in a few places, to find the ideal location for it, that works best. Never have I had to drill holes in my boat..nor could I bring myself to either. Haha.

Which one do you use for your installation? I'm trying to see if I can put one in the bilge. The bilge is just so deep and hard to reach.

A good sealant will work. I used CT1 last time. But have used normal silicone lots of times previously. Remember and test a few locations first off, with Vaseline or something similar.

Great thanks! So it doesn't have to be in the bilge where it's closer to the water?

As long it is glued, as in Epoxied, to the Hull with no air gaps, it will likely work. How it would compare to a conventional mounting on the Transom? Likely far less Range. Mounting it forward the Transom, only provides any readings if that part of the Hull isn't out of the Water. There is no advantage at Planing Speeds to mounting forward of the Transom, if you end up in the Shallows, you may have a fraction of a Second Warning before Impact

Thanks, I'm mainly using this for a fish finder so I'm wondering if that will impact my capabilities of sensing fish deeper in the water.

For full disclosure, I’ve never been any sort of angler, so couldn’t say for certain…but I know I can see fish and their detail on mine. Also know that the raymarine I currently have shows detail on the bottom of the Loch here at 650ft depths. The downvision chirp function even managed to show in amazing detail, the clear and obvious shape of a lost propeller on the bottom from a friends boat. Also shows the clear shape of my anchor too,
But if you are a serious angler and have a fancy system…you might want to put it on the transom. I’d think all the serious anglers would do this. I just can’t deal with the idea of drilling holes in my boat really. Makes me shudder

You aren't a real boater unless you drill a bunch of holes to add custom equipment. Routing wires over the transom looks so unfinished. Holes are sealed up easy peasy.

Installing a transducer in the bilge is OK I guess, but for me its just too much work climbing down under. Besides, the transom mount is easier to service.

The attached pic shows a transducer cable and a paddle wheel speedometer linked thru the same hole, with an over-sized clam shell. Out of view is the OEM pitot with a similar clam shell. BTW, the paddle wheel, pitot and GPS all show equal speed within 1 mph.

Appreciate it, I might take off the current pitot cover and make a bigger hole to put both wired through

I don’t think it will do quite as well as a fishfinder if you’re shooting through the hull, especially for side- or down-imaging sonars.

Shoot thru installations work for depth. Not so good for fish finding.

Introduces a frequency shift and a significant loose of sensitivity. Even with a “wet tank” installation, I was loosing almost 50% of my signal with a 600W RMS sounder

Can’t do shoot thru because of the geometry and the much higher frequencies 450 - 1,000 kHz used with side and down imaging. Not enough energy getting thru the hull

Not great photos, but that's how I've got it setup right now. Looking at the exterior in the photo, it's a little ungainly. But in real life, I nearly never notice that cable, and it has never gotten in the way (even the dog gets in and out without a problem). I like that I can very easily pull the system and stick it in another boat (as if in I actually wanted to use it to fish), but if I had to do it over again - and I may still one day - I'd get a longer cable and run it to the other side of the outdrive (port side).

Would love to see some screen shots and know what unit/ transducer your using to get "amazing detail" in 650 ft. of water.

Running a Garmin with a 500W GT51M transducer. Traditional CHIRP gets me to @ 1,200 ft, but I run out of juice with side scan in the 70-75 ft. range. ClearVu gets me in the 200-225 ft. range but not with any detail.
