What is this hole?

So I purchased a 1985 18' Sunrunner open bow with the 140 hp mercruiser 4 cyl and I believe alpha one outdrive.

We had it on the lake this weekend and noticed a lot of water coming in when the drive was up so immediately thought bellows, but when I got looking today there are no bellows in relation to this hole. Just the water hose that goes to what I believe is the thermostat housing?

What could be causing this?

Hole is just to the right lower than the pipe.

Trying to get the pictures to work, I have them uploaded to my album but it says I have none uploaded when I am in post.

Best I can do on short notice... That's the hole, and I took a pic for identification of motor and drive.

with the drive up, and water coming in is most likely the shift cable bellows. i dont think that hole to the right of the water pipe goes through the gimbal. did you actually see water coming from that hole before you pulled the boat?

Yes I have watched the water flow through that hole multiple times. It stops when it's down flows when it's up. Engine running or not.

the yellow arrows are drain holes, seeing water from there means the main drivshaft bellow is leaking when the drive is raised.

Yes, that hole right in front of your arrow is where the water is coming from. I did not notice any oil when the water was coming in but there is that film below it now that it has sat.

So, that film could be grease, not oil. And you're saying driveshaft bellow?

I had what looked to be water coming from that hole, turned out it was the water hose you see there there going from the transom to the power steering water cooler. That hose is a standard size and then the replacement kit comes with different size rubber grommets that go over the metal pipe fitting that the hose then goes over that you clamp down. I replaced that hose & grommet and the constant dripping of water there stopped (for me it only happened when the engine was running).

a leaking inlet hose is a bit different from water coming in from the vent hole
