What is this compartment on my 98 bayliner trophy???

the compartment is inside my cuddy cabin, has a lid that opens up and there are 3 drains that run into it. after it rains this compartment fills up bout half way but no more. I use a vac to suck up the water and it still fills back up. i suck up about 20 gallons of water before it stops refilling.

Looks like part of the bilge. That small tube in the bottom should connect to the next section going back. So, when you vacuum that part, you are actually sucking water from the entire bilge. What drains are running to it?

i dont believe its water from the bilge (back of the boat) but i can check again. There are 2 long compartments in the cuddy cabin i verfied one drain is going to that compartment I do have a leak in the cuddy cabin i have yet to diagnosis where its coming from. I assume because there is cracks in the gel coat from the deck.

The bilge can run the entire length of the boat, and it sounds as if yours does if you can get 20 gal out ...

I had a Bayliner Trophy W/A cuddy. That compartment below the step should have a (approx) 1" pipe leading from it back to the bilge. The reason you have water in it is because you are getting water into your bilge somehow.

The reason it's there is to remove water from the cabin in the event it gets flooded for whatever reason. I had never had water come into mine, but the bilge on my boat was always dry as a bone. You could always put in a rubber plug, but that won't help you find the source of the water intrusion.

Look here for water entering:

Thru hull fitting for the aerator /bait well
Drain plug not secure
Water trapped in the floor mounted fishboxes (common)
Seeping through crack(s) in the hull
Rainwater
Deck access hatches need new gaskets/o-rings

I had a Bayliner Trophy W/A cuddy. That compartment below the step should have a (approx) 1" pipe leading from it back to the bilge. The reason you have water in it is because you are getting water into your bilge somehow.

The bilage runs the full length of the boat. The holes fore/aft let any water travel to the rear of the boat. Period!

The reason it's there is to remove water from the cabin in the event it gets flooded for whatever reason.

There is no drains in the floor other than the hole for your table pedistal. The hole for the mount allows water to drain to the lower bilage, thus allowing the water to travel to the rear of the boat to the bilage pump.

The most likely area of water intrusion are as follows.

1) Front anchor well. The drains are not sealled well from thew factory and drain right into the cabin.

2) all deck mounted hard wear. These over time get unseal and the bolts are accessed from the cabin. Or beter yet they drain into the cabin.

3) any access hatches in the cockpit area. Mine had a factory tackle box. This had cracks that allowed water to seep into the bilage.

4) Any cup holders drain into the bilage on the newer boats. Drain tubes.

It probably is not you fish wells, if they leaked they would probably swamp your boat if left over night docked. They tend to be full when the boat is in the water on mine. Also have you confirmed that when you park your boat do you raise the front height enough for this area to drain. When docked this area depending on you load/weight distibution couyld be your lowest point. I had this issue with my boat when I have all my stuff loaded up front.

Take a look at my resto project to get an idea of how these boat are constucted. They are still made somewhat the same.

Thanks for the responses, but the items I mentioned are correct. According to the Bayliner manual for the Trophy (yes, I had one), the drain in the step well was ther to aid in "removal of water from the cabin area in the event of flooding". Yes, I know the bilge runs the entire length of the boat, that's why the drain is there. I use the term bilge as the aft-most portion of the boat. Technically, the rest is just hull.

How much water do you think can come in thru deck mounted hardware? I get that water could seep in through non-seal screw holes, but enough to puddle up the bilge/hull all the way to the bow? Seriously?

The fishboxes were equipped with drains, depending on year. They weren't standard equipment until after 1993 (or so). Mine came equipped with factory drains which were not sealed and tended to leak out any trapped water into the bilge. The drains were Y connected to a single thru hull fitting just above the water line.

I'm sure the anchor locker is a culprit as well. They were never made to seal properly.

i always forget minor details and your post makes alot of sense. the front of the boat is not higher then the back. im not able to were i have it sitting at.
The cabin would flood do to rain, Here is where it leaks in the cabin. Ill try to take pics later at work now.
1) The table top (for the inside cabin table) slides into almost like tray brackets. the rear bracket/brace is always soaked with water. so i unscrewed it and put marine silicone sealant on the thread and screwed it back in helped alittle but still leaks.
2) there are 2 seams on opposite sides that leaks looks like from the top deck. ill take pics later.
*Here are some pics of the top of the deck that i had taken already. these are the cracks in the gelcoat(i assume that is whats it called) on the deck.
will these cracks cause leaks into the cabin?
BTW- i was lookin at your project a few days ago, good job on it man!

yes my boat has drains on the wells with a pump like you describe. I checked my wells and they have held water up to the top so i assume no leak is present from the wells.

If you check my thread you will see how I have fixed the leak up front. I still have not drill the new hole though.

These pics are not the source of your water problem. They would only saturate you fiberglass and wood. You are looking for something bigger that this.

Wait wait....

Sounds like a sump where the 3 drains are going into it..

Where do you suck up 20 gals of water from ?? the Bilge or the box ? ( sumps are not that 20 gal big ).

When it rains you have to suck up 20 gals from where ? ..

More info needed...

i suck up 20 gallons from the box where the 3 drains go into (see pic above at top). the box only carries about 2-3 gallons; however my shop vac sucks up 5 gallons at a time. During which the (box with the 3 drains) is refilling with more water. I do this about 3-4 times is where i get 20 gallons from. i shoudla gave more info sorry.

Get the boat totally dried out. Raise the bow higher than the bilge and remove the drain plug. Make sure the hole is free of debris and get all the water out of the boat.

Remove all the deck hatches and put the boat in the water. Check with a flashlight and see where the water is coming in. If you sit in the water for an hour and nothing comes in, have someone operate the boat and see if water is coming in through the clamshell fitting on front (unlikely).

Run the pump for the live well and check the bilge again. If it's dry, move on.

If it's still dry, then you know your water is coming in from rain.

The bilge is the lowest compartment on a ship where the two sides meet at the keel. The word was coined in 1523. Not just back in the engine compartment.

You have a box..that fills with water when it rains..and you can suck up 20 gals out of it..

Does your engine bilge pump goto this box ? Possible routing that into the box for "containment" ? ??

can you tell us Where these hoses come from..or goto from the box ?

This sounds to make sense so the correct term is Step Well is the compartment in my cabin where the water flows into.
is there a compartment under the cabin that fills up with water and then the hose drains into the "step well"?

I tried to draw a pic of my logic.
I dont know how these boats are constructed which is throwing my understanding off.

3) this is my orginal posted question, lol I have only determined 1 of the 3 holes comes from the side compartment where you store your lifejackets etc.

forgive my ignorance first boat here. deck hatches as in the hatch to the fuel tank, engine bilge and wher else?

also i do get water in the engine bilge after use. water does pour out. Are you saying this should be dry after removing the drain plug?
