what is thi part???

A part fell of my lower unit and I'd like to know what it is? It was a small rectangular silver piece on the side of the lower unit shaft (the part above the prop section.) It was held in place by a screw going through to the other side with the same piece on the other side. I don't know if it's a "vital"
part. There's nothing inside/mechanical - looks like storage?? I tried google ing the diagram for 1993 15 hp Johnson - can't locate it. Anyone know what it is?

Go to this site and navigate to your motor, then open the gearcase diagram.

If you are looking at the sacrificial anode, it is important that they be in good condition; not heavily pitted or chalky in appearance.

The anodes are especially important in waters that are acid or alkaline and in salt or brackish water.
