What is the yellow wire?

I just bought a replacement tachometer for my 88 150. The tachometer looks identical to my old tachometer except where the green and black wire come out, there is an additional yellow wire. Does anyone know what this yellow wire if for?

It is a ignition wire to power gauges when key is on. I have a '89 and that is what it does on mine. Double check with a test light.
