It's a cover for the recirculation system, referred to as the "dog bone". The recirc system takes unburned/excess fuel from each cylinder and routes it up to the intake where it is run through again. Can cause issues if it becomes plugged up....poor idle, sluggishness, etc.

Mine has little metal screens behind each of the reeds.....make sure they are clean......and the hose running to the intake, check to see if it plugged up. Not much to it really.....

First you should tell us what the problem is your having?
Never really run across a problem with the dog bone.
They can get clogged with carbon pieces.
But since the advent of TCW-3 oils the carbon problems is not much of a problem.

poor idle sluggishness, cleaned out the small screens and seems to be running steady.

check valves are located where on the engine, do you have a pic of the location. sry very very new to outboard engines but am pretty decent with car mechanics.
The check valve is built into the fitting the hose pushes onto on the dog bone.....might spray some carb cleaner in there to clean it.....take the boat out and see how it does on the water, under load. Sometimes it runs great in the driveway, and different on the water.
