Hi all. I was just wondering what the best solution to clean my old 1970 9.5 johnson outboard with. I have removed the lower unit to replace water pump materials. There appears to be a lot of dirt and grime on/around the lower unit. Doesn't look like the lower unit has been removed or cleaned in quite awhile. What would be the best cleaning solution to use to clean/remove the dirt and grime without doing any harm. Thanks

You might want to try Gunk degreaser in a spray can.

I use WD40 to wipe down motors.

Use Super Clean from Walmart. Take the motor outside and have a water hose rigged up. I use a double ended cleaning brush from Harbor Freight to clean in all the cavities. Splash the SC on or pour onto the brush. Use a cloth for the external large surfaces. Rinse as you go. Wet the cloth before use.
The comments I get are "nice clean motor". Purple power doesn't work. Use heavy rubber gloves and don't get the stuff in your eyes or on the skin. Rinse with water immediately if that happens.
