I have a 95 monterey, the top unit and motor has never been removed. The bearings and couplings lubed through zerk fittings. When we take the boat out for the day i might get a tablespoon of water out of it when i remove the plug. If the boat is not on the lake its in my garage. The previous owner did allow the wood in the cushions and deck under the buckets to rot from people sitting on them soaking wet. I'll be relacing them this winter if i keep the boat.
My question is should i woory about the transom at this time, every thing seems to be sound and not soft in any areas to the touch.
thanks bob

Re: what is the average life of a transom

The answer is probably one part "depends how it was built" and one part "depends on how it's cared for"

The fact that hte floor went rotten just from wet swimsuits doesn't lead me to believe it's the best construction. You will probably find that the rot wasn't really caused by wet swim suits, but is a symptom of a larger problem.

Use the "sounding" technique. Tap lightly with a hammer and listen for a "dead" spot. I'd check around suspect areas; motor bolts, bilge drain, top edge of transom if it's not covered by the deck / hull joint.
