Re: What is DVA

direct voltage adapter?

DVA means direct voltage adapter. It's just another name for a peak reading voltmeter. The one I have is made by Stevens instruments. It's different from a standard voltmeter in that it's designed to read voltages that are not constant. It reads the peak or highest voltages from a source that gives a voltage that rises and falls. For OMC and other brands of conventional 2 strokes it's required equipment in service manuals for testing ignition components.

Alternating current changes direction many times each second (depends on the "frequency"), so "100 volts peak AC", for example, alternately rises to +100V and falls to -100V. Your multimeter, set on "AC", will calculate and display an "average voltage", which will be somewhere around 60 to 70 volts depending on a number of factors. But a peak reading meter, or a your multimeter with a "DVA" attached, will display 100V.

an adapter for use with your multimeter

Re: What is DVA

Would you believe it if you saw a Multi meter at Harbor freight and tool with a PVA in it for $14.99 ?
I actually bought one for $2.99 I wanted to see a digital read on My battery , before And after start for a general Idea if it was charging . BUT the $2.99 one will work for about 1 minute on a battery that is over 10 AMPs , But it showed me a pre start 11 volts ,... Engine running 13.7 to 14.1 volts variation ,I suppose this means it's charging , But the darn thing blew the fuse . So I suppose I will try the $14.99 one if I can see that it handles the AMP of an out board , do You know what AMPS the meter shold handle ? or is it too good to be true that a multi meter will work for 14.99
